SUMMARY:Tim Parkin - ‘Competitions In The Art World’
DESCRIPTION:(As well as access to the live event\, you will receive a link to the recording\, which will be valid for 14 days) \nTim will introduce us to the historical significance of competitions in the art world\, focusing on contemporary photography competitions. \nFrom the Salons of France to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition\, photographers and painters have always competed to find a place for their work. \nHe will discuss many aspects of modern photography competitions\, specifically the Natural Landscape Photographer of the Year competition and book. \nYou will understand the potential advantages and driving forces behind participating in photography competitions. \nTim is a landscape photographer and editor of the landscape photography magazine\, ‘On Landscape’. \nHe uses a mix of film and digital cameras but mostly film in small\, medium\, large sized format. \nPhotography was a childhood interest\, but he left it for computing. He later returned\, captivated by large-format cameras. Despite their cumbersome nature\, he found them empowering\, allowing for greater control and a more deliberate approach to image-making. \nHe believes photography is a tool for self-discovery and a means of deeper connection with the world. By slowing down and paying attention to the details\, you can capture the essence of a moment and relive it through the lens.

SUMMARY:Joe Cornish - ‘Coast And Wildwood\, Moor And Mountain’
DESCRIPTION:(As well as access to the live event\, you will receive a link to the recording\, which will be valid for 14 days) \nAfter a life-changing injury\, renowned Landscape Photographer and Thinker\, shares his passion for wild places and the art of Photography. \nFollowing a serious neck injury in October after falling on a mountain\, Joe faced his mortality more directly than ever before. And he asked himself\, ‘What has this life been for’?  \n‘Photographing landscape is not a job for me\, it’s a way of thinking\, being\, living. \nMy greatest commitment is to wild places and wilderness wherever I can find them. \nWhy? Firstly\, because I love these places more than any others. Secondly\, because philosophically\, I believe preserving and regenerating wildness is critical to the health of life\, and humanity’s future on our wonder planet.’ \nIn the live zoom talk\, you’ll hear Joe exploring this philosophy further. \nYou’ll also learn the composition and lighting approaches he uses to bring the landscape to life. And discover the connections with the other Arts that influence his thinking and ideas. \nHe will also discuss the contradiction of the photographer who needs to travel\, with the environmentalist who hopes to minimise their carbon footprint. \nA professional photographer since 1980\, Joe Cornish is based in North Yorkshire and has devoted the last 30 years to landscape photography. \nHe is an acclaimed thinker on the role of photography\, especially in environmentalism\, and has written countless articles for ‘On Landscape’ which he helped co-found. \nAn honorary Fellow of the RPS\, he helped form (and was first Chair) of the Landscape Distinctions panel. \nRecent books include Scotland’s Mountains; Scotland’s Coast; The Northumberland Coast; This Land; Capability Brown; Humphry Repton; Woodland Sanctuary (with Simon Baxter); Still Time to Wonder (on Fountains Abbey).

SUMMARY:Photo Tour - Venice\, Italy with Paul Sansome (3 spaces left)
DESCRIPTION:(Only 3 places left – Deposit £400 – Price £1950 p.p. (accommodation only) \nEmail roy@myphotoclub.co.uk for full itinerary and/or to book. \nVenice!\n Iconic\, and one of the most beautiful\, world-renowned sites – a must for photographers… \n\nPaul says “Great photography comes from a love of the subject matter\, and no urban setting is as inspiring as this unique and beautiful city. \nIt is also a place that seems to suit creative photography\, with opportunities for multiple exposures\, long exposures and ICM\, all of which I enjoy”. \n\n Venice has a reputation for being marred by mass tourism\, but it is not too difficult to avoid the congestion of the most famous locations. \nOne way is to travel at a quieter time of year and this is one reason for visiting in November.\nIt can actually be very quiet in the morning\, and the soft light can be conducive to producing strong images.\nYou should expect to be particularly busy at dawn and dusk. \nThe photography potential is increased by the prospect of foggy days. \n\nOur trip is timed to coincide with one of Venice’s most significant religious festivals\, the Madonna della Salute Feast Day\, when church Santa Maria Del Salute is connected to San Marco by a floating bridge. It might seem odd to choose to visit when there will be more crowds but this is an event for the locals and should provide some very different photography opportunities of the worshippers\, as they walk along the streets\, and as they light candles in the impressive church. This 1-day event only impacts a small part of the city. \nThere is group education at the beginning\, to give an awareness of some creative and compositional ideas\, as well as a strong technical grounding in how to get the best results. Paul is always available on location and the guidance given when alongside someone taking the photographs is probably the most instructive. \n\nPaul is one of the UK’s most successful fine art photographers. He has been Highly Commended in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year\, has many times featured in Landscape Photographer of the Year\, and in 2017 won the first of several major awards in the Travel Photographer of the Year competition. \nFor the past 20 years\, Paul has been leading photography holidays each year to countries that include Italy\, Morocco\, Iceland\, Myanmar\, Vietnam and India.
