SUMMARY:Affinity Tuition Sessions with James Ritson (4 workshops on Fridays 25th September\, 2nd\, 9th\, and 16th October)
DESCRIPTION:Fridays 25th September\, 2nd\, 9th\, and 16th October.  19:00 – 21:00 UK (Recordings are available – valid until 16th December) \nThis four-part series of workshops has been designed to help photographers build confidence and fluency in the free Affinity application.    \nJames Ritson\, part of the software development and research team at Affinity\, will lead these workshops. \n Affinity is a free-to-use\, complete post-processing environment\, he’ll explain its background\, core principles\, and how its tools are designed to support thoughtful\, non-destructive image making. \nSession 01\nIntroducing Affinity: what it is\, what we’re trying to achieve\, an overview of our latest update\, then a demonstration of some typical functionality (RAW editing\, layers and masking\, HDR merging and tone mapping\, stacking). Finally\, a look at new functionality and features\, some of which will be explored over the next three sessions. \nSession 02\nAn in-depth session focusing on typical image editing workflows from start to finish\, e.g. initial RAW development followed by layer-based retouching\, then final sharpening/cropping and exporting. We’ll explore non-destructive editing as a concept and how to achieve it within Affinity. \nSession 03\nLooking at more esoteric workflows such as working with HDR images (exploring the different ways you can tone map\, how to avoid pitfalls of 32-bit linear compositing) and wildlife photography (making the subject of image more prominent\, noise reduction\, editing distractions). \nSession 04\nTechniques for processing low light imagery (initial RAW enhancement\, non-destructive dodging and burning\, colour manipulation\, stacking) Review of the 4 Tuition Sessions and outstanding issues and questions. \nJames Ritson\,  is a programmer\, photographer and software specialist with extensive experience working with Affinity for image processing workflows. He is known for his clear\, methodical teaching style and deep understanding of non-destructive editing workflows\, helping photographers develop efficient\, flexible\, post-processing practices grounded in careful observation and creative intent.

She combines her professional teaching experience with a passion for photography\, particularly flower photography\, and enjoys helping others develop their creative skills. SUMMARY:Macro Fundamentals Tuition with Tony North (5 Sessions on Mondays 5th\, 19th October 2nd\, 9th\, 16th November)
DESCRIPTION:Master macro photography from gear and fieldcraft\, to creative techniques and processing\, with award-winning\, specialist expert Tony North. \n(As well as access to all five live sessions\, you will automatically receive links to the recordings\, which will remain available until 1 March 2027) \nMacro photography brings us remarkably close to subjects and details that are easily overlooked\, but consistently producing excellent images requires much more than simply getting close. \nAcross five sessions\, Tony North will take you through the complete process of macro photography\, combining detailed tuition with numerous photographic examples from his own work. \nStarting with equipment and the different ways of achieving high-quality close-up photography\, the series progresses through fieldcraft and understanding your subjects\, the technical skills needed for sharp\, well-exposed photographs\, the creative decisions that make an image beautiful\, and finally the processing techniques that bring everything together. \nMacro Fundamentals 1: Gear \nUnderstand the equipment available for close-up and macro photography and how to choose what is right for you. \nMacro lenses\, extension tubes\, close-up filters and other equipment\, together with the importance of camera type and how different approaches affect the results you can achieve. \nLearn how to test your equipment for image quality and check whether your existing set-up is giving you the performance you need for successful macro photography. \nMacro Fundamentals 2: Fieldcraft \nLearn how understanding nature can dramatically improve your chances of finding and photographing macro subjects successfully in the field. \nProductive locations\, weather conditions\, the best times of year and day\, and the biology and behaviour of insects. \nSee how good fieldcraft can help you approach subjects without disturbing them\, work safely around insects and recognise potential hazards while photographing on location. \nMacro Fundamentals 3: Technical Skills \nDevelop the technical skills needed to produce consistently high-quality macro photographs. \nKnow how camera settings\, exposure and shutter speed affect your results\, how to minimise noise and maximise sharpness\, and how to manage the particularly demanding depth-of-field challenges of close-up photography. \nTony will also explain focusing techniques and focus stacking\, showing when and why these approaches can help you achieve the result you want. \nMacro Fundamentals 4: Artistry \nMove beyond technical accuracy and consider what makes a macro photograph visually successful. \nExplore composition\, backgrounds and bokeh\, lighting and colour\, showing how each can change the appearance and impact of an image. \nSee how creative decisions work alongside technical qualities such as sharpness and depth of field\, helping you produce photographs that are not simply technically sound\, but beautiful. \nMacro Fundamentals 5: Processing \nFollow a complete editing workflow designed to get the best from your finished macro photographs. \nStarting with the RAW file\, Tony will cover sharpening\, noise reduction\, focus stacking\, correcting stacking errors and applying the final adjustments that complete an image. \nLive demonstrations will include Lightroom\, Topaz Denoise\, Helicon Focus and Photoshop\, while the underlying principles will be applicable to similar editing software. \nTony North is a Manchester-based photographer specialising in macro photography. Since taking up photography in 2016\, he has gained numerous awards and distinctions\, including MPAGB and ABPE. In 2023 he was the overall winner of International Garden Photographer of the Year. His combination of technical expertise\, field knowledge and creative photography makes him ideally placed to guide photographers through every stage of producing successful macro images.
